Tony’s Fishing Report
Local lakes: Anglers are still reporting good rainbow trout fishing at Bradley Lake near Bandon. Some of the spring-stocked fish being caught are measuring 12 to 14 inches each. Next week, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is scheduled to stock Bradley Lake with an additional 1,000 trophy-size trout. Often overlooked are the sloughs that run into the Coquille River and hold trout, largemouth bass and panfish. Two anglers came by to tell us about the nice trout and bass they caught in the Fat Elk Slough upriver off state Highway 42 South. They caught trout on Panther Martin’s spinners, and largemouth bass on spinner baits.
Local rivers: Larry from the Rogue Outdoor Store in Gold Beach told us that Indian Creek Hatchery Chinook have been showing up in the bay, and anglers did well catching them the past three days. Fishing for hatchery coho salmon on the lower Rogue has been productive, as well. Last week, anglers fishing the lower Coquille River bay did well catching Chinook salmon, along with a few wild coho salmon. Anglers are starting to see and catch more coho this week. Last week, the ODFW estimated that 37 of the Coquille’s 825-fish wild coho quota had been taken. Bank anglers are starting to pick up a few hatchery Chinook salmon up Sevenmile Slough off North Bank Lane. Chuck Miller of Bandon caught his limit of Chinook up Sevenmile on Monday morning on a sand shrimp under a bobber.
Salmon fishing has remained very good in Coos Bay. Anglers are doing well catching Chinook near the Marshfield Channel and upriver to Dellwood. Bank anglers are catching some nice Chinook off the Coos Bay Boardwalk. One angler stopped by to let us know that he helped anglers on the boardwalk net more than 25 salmon last Sunday. As of last week, the ODFW had estimated that 52 of the 1,200-fish wild coho quota on the Coos had been met.
Pacific Ocean: A large ocean swell associated with a southerly front has prevented sport anglers from accessing the ocean. The swell is forecasted to continue throughout the week.
Area shellfish: Crabbing in Bandon has remained very good. One crabber caught his limit of 12 crab early Monday morning in less than an hour off Weber’s Pier. The crab are really starting to fill out after their yearly molt. Crabbing in Coos Bay has been very good, as well. Boaters are getting nice limits of Dungeness crab in the lower bay.
